About
Johnson County Criminal Defense Lawyer and Former Prosecutor
Michael C. Duma is a Kansas City native and accomplished Kansas criminal defense attorney leading Duma Law Offices in Olathe, Kansas. For over ten years, Duma has defended clients across Johnson County and the Kansas City Metro on crimes ranging from DUI and drug charges to the most serious felony offenses in State and Federal court. Before building his defense practice, Duma began his legal career as a prosecutor in Wyandotte County, where he gained firsthand experience in courtroom litigation and the appellate process—insight he now uses to challenge the government’s evidence, protect constitutional rights, and guide clients through high-stakes decisions.
In private practice, Duma has consistently been recognized as a leader in his field of criminal defense. Since 2015, Duma has been selected as a "Super Lawyer" by Thompson Reuters and a "Top 100" lawyer by The National Trial Lawyers Association. He is also frequently sought by local media to provide perspective on notable cases and legal developments as well as volunteers his time in providing ongoing legal education for other Kansas attorneys—reflecting a commitment to both rigorous advocacy for individual clients and a broader understanding of how the law shapes the community. Duma is known for his intense trial preparation, strategic motion practice, and his calm, assertive demeanor from investigation through verdict. He believes the greatest calling of a criminal defense attorney is to fight for someone that is wrongly accused, be with them through the process of being prosecuted, and walk out of the courtroom with them when a verdict of not guilty is returned.
Michael's educational background includes a Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law and an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Wyandotte County Bar Association, the Johnson County Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Additionally, he serves on the Wyandotte County Bench-Bar Committee.
Michael is strong supporter of the second amendment. In his spare time, he participates in USPSA shooting competitions and maintains a Federal Firearms License. As a result, Michael stays up to date on firearm laws and takes pride in helping individuals maintain their firearm rights when charged with a crime.
